Artist Update: Susannah Hays
Presenting new work by Silo118 photographer Susannah Hays! Just added to our collection are 8 new works from the Siena Archives series. Continuing her work photographing medieval books in Italy, this series follows the earlier Biblioteca series. (Works from both series are available in Susannah Hays’ collection. ABOUT THE SERIES:
Inspired by their capacity to be objects of investigation both literally and symbolically, these images were made in the Siena State Archive June of 2019.
Today, more than before, we recognize the human predicament of finding agency through the primacy of comparative texts and images. Whether carved in stone, scribed on paper or encrypted by (future) technology we remain with an original question:
What obscures an eidetic sense for the whole of ourselves?
What regions or categories might bare significance to embody this desire?
As archives grow in stacks and bundles, gathered by threads and cords, readers re-read seeking a cultural understanding. But more so, we search for that personal divisible subtext. A corporal sensation wants to emerge from my imagination.

We would also like to congratulate Susannah on the inclusion of her image “Logica” in the current issue of Lapham’s Quarterly, a wonderful cultural magazine for art, history, and ideas!
